Background & CV

Background

Daniel Goodwin examines the impact and interrelationship of place on how we think and feel, their resonance and dissonance, similar to that of a piece of instrumental music. His abstract artwork includes elements, details and motifs from photographs, and written reflections from walks, cycling and other travels. It features strong linear mark making and is often close to monochrome. He usually produces pieces in parallel, forming an interrelated group, which can be viewed individually or sequentially.

The resulting drawing-led artworks are usually in acrylic or ink, on paper, panel and canvas. He also works with photography, relief printing, and video sequences of images, and is venturing into sculptural/3D worlds.

A lifelong interest in place and time is at the root of Daniel’s practice, underpinned by ideas derived from contemporary and modern classical music. Artistic influences are diverse and include (amongst many others) Tracey Emin, Andy Goldsworthy, Derek Jarman, Anselm Keifer, Lee Krasner, and the artists of COBRA and the post-WWII School of Paris. Musical influences include Benjamin Britten, Anna Clyne, Peter Maxwell Davies, Missy Mazzoli, Nico Muhly, Steve Reich and Igor Stravinsky. Writers such as Roland Barthes, John Berger, Umberto Eco, Alexandra Harris, Rob Macfarlane, Kate Molleson, Alex Ross, Carlo Rovelli, and Nan Shepherd, also provide food for thought.

Daniel would like the  viewer to find something in the work that, in the manner of music or poetry, resonates in some way; either as an immediate connection or perhaps longer term reflection.
